Description:
Under state law, the Chief of Police is responsible for:

  • overseeing and managing the operation of the Police and Communications Departments
  • issuing General Orders, Policies and Procedures, and Rules and Regulations of the Department, subject to the approval of the Board of Selectmen

The Police Chief was instrumental in the search for a site which culminated in the construction of a new Public Safety Building in 1991, and the implementation of the D.A.R.E. and Community Policing programs.

The Chief oversees a corps of police officers, auxiliaries, police matrons, and communications personnel; all of these are appointed by the Selectmen and are either employees or officers of the Town.

This information was provided by the Board of Selectmen and the Town Government Study Committee.
